Finding a good Greek restaurant in Brussels is not always easy, let’s face it. So I am thrilled to introduce you to…E R G O N, a new great spot in the EU Quarter.
ERGON, which means work, vocation, but also the result of such work, is a network of concept stores / restaurants, offering top quality products from Greece. Guests can fine-grocery shop or take a seat and have a taste of the menu. I don’t know about you, but when I would think of Greek cuisine, I often pictured a basic feta salad and some souvlaki skewers.
ERGON is changing that narrow vision of the Greek culinary scene -it has certainly revolutioned mine! It is revisiting the Greek cuisine to propose sophisticated yet simple mezze. ERGON understood that tradition doesn’t necessarily mean old. Their dishes are created by the celebrated Dimitris Skarmoutsos. They are delicate, delicious and beautiful. Indeed the Chef is known for transcending the culinary status quo without losing sight of his roots. As for the products sold at the store, they come from different independent Greek producers, each of them experts in their respective fields.
Georges, the Brussels’ ERGON branch manager, told me a bit of the place’s philosophy. And it can be summed up like this:
Kathryn and I went for lunch and were pleasantly surprised by the size of the servings! We ordered 4 things. 2 or 3 would have been enough!
We tried the Greek tomato salad, with basil oil, feta cheese from Mitilini and olives from Chalkidiki (10€), the Freshly cut Fries with staka cream from Chania (6€), Gruyère from Naxos rolled in carob flour, oat flakes, poppy seeds served with rose petals in syrup (9€) and Meatballs with raisins, pistachio and mustard from Thessaloniki with lavender (9€).
Our verdict: the crusted Gruyère and the Tomato salad are worthy of the Greek Gods. Go with friends, family or colleagues, order some mezzes to share, some Asyrtiko wine (white) or some Aghiorghitiko (red) and enjoy. And when you’re done, have some Greek coffee! You can also buy it in the store.
One last thing… Καλή όρεξη! (Bon appétit!)
